Saint Episteme of Emesa
Nun and martyr
Emesa and Mount Publion
Feast day: November 5

A life of faith
Episteme was betrothed to Galaction of Emesa and received Christian baptism through him. They subsequently entered separate monastic communities at Mount Publion. When Galaction was arrested, Episteme voluntarily joined him and declared her own Christian faith. The account remembers her steadfast confession during their persecution and martyrdom.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
A reflection
Episteme’s life raises a question about faithful companionship: how can you stand beside someone facing pressure without surrendering your own convictions?
