A life of faith

Eusebius served as Bishop of Samosata during the fourth-century disputes over the Nicene confession of faith. He resisted imperial pressure, endured exile, and traveled to support Christian communities that lacked clergy. The Orthodox account remembers him helping appoint bishops, priests, and deacons while encouraging congregations to remain steadfast. When ordered into exile, he left quietly to reduce the risk of public unrest. After returning, he continued his work until an attacker struck him with a roof tile. As he lay dying, he asked those nearby not to harm the woman responsible. His witness joins doctrinal courage to restraint and forgiveness.

The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.

A reflection

Practice holding a conviction without seeking revenge. Eusebius's final request shows that defending the faith and protecting an enemy from retaliation can belong together.
