Saint Eustathius of Antioch
Hierarch
Beroea and Antioch
Feast day: February 21

A life of faith
Eustathius served as Bishop of Beroea before becoming Archbishop of Antioch. A learned theologian, he defended the confession that the Son shares the Father's divine nature during the fourth-century controversy surrounding Arius. He participated in the Council of Nicaea and continued to support its teaching afterward. Political and ecclesiastical opposition eventually brought deposition and exile. The Church's account remembers him continuing his theological work despite removal from his city. His remains were later brought back to Antioch, where his memory endured. Orthodox Christians honor him as a bishop whose teaching and perseverance helped sustain the Nicene faith through a prolonged period of conflict.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
A reflection
Give careful study time to a belief you value. Eustathius's example encourages patient teaching and perseverance when faithful work receives opposition rather than immediate recognition.
