Saint Eustathius of Mtskheta
Martyr
Georgia · early Christian centuries
Feast day: July 29

A life of faith
Eustathius was a Persian who settled in Mtskheta and became drawn to Christian life in Georgia. Baptized by the catholicos, he married and joined the life of the local Church. Reports of his conversion brought imprisonment with other Christians. After several months, intercession by Georgian leaders secured their release. A later change of governor brought renewed accusations and another demand to abandon Christ. Eustathius remained firm and was killed. Christians returned his body to Mtskheta for burial. His commemoration remembers a convert whose faith developed within a household and community before the final trial of persecution.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
A reflection
Consider how community supports a new beginning. Welcome a learner with patience, and offer practical help when fear or isolation makes participation difficult.
