Saint Euthymius of Suzdal
Venerable Abbot
Nizhny Novgorod and Suzdal
Feast day: April 1

A life of faith
Euthymius received his monastic formation at the Caves Monastery near Nizhny Novgorod under Dionysius, who advised him to moderate excessive ascetic practices. He later went to Suzdal to establish a new monastery at the request of the local prince. The community adopted a common rule of life and grew substantially under his direction. Euthymius expected the monks to share assigned responsibilities and worked continually for their benefit. He also maintained contact with Sergius of Radonezh. He died in 1404. His commemoration recalls the patient establishment of communal life, with spiritual effort directed toward a lasting responsibility for other people.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
