Saint Ezekiel the Prophet
Prophet
Babylonia · 6th century BC
Feast day: July 21

A life of faith
Ezekiel was a priest who lived among the people exiled from Judah to Babylonia. Near the river Chebar, he received the vision of divine glory that opened his prophetic calling. His ministry addressed both judgment and restoration, refusing to treat exile as the end of God’s care for his people. The valley of dry bones became a powerful image of life restored where hope seemed finished. Orthodox worship also receives his vision of a closed gate as an image associated with the Mother of God. His book holds disturbing loss and the promise of renewal within the same prophetic witness.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
A reflection
Bring a place of discouragement into prayer. Begin one modest act of restoration, while allowing grief to be spoken honestly rather than hurried away.
