Saint Florus of Illyria
Stoneworker and martyr
Ulpiana in Dardania · early Christian period
Feast day: August 18

A life of faith
Florus worked in stone with his twin brother Laurus after learning the craft from Christian teachers. At Ulpiana, they were commissioned to build a pagan temple. The calendar records that the brothers distributed their pay to poor people and prayed while completing the work. The brothers joined other converts in destroying the temple’s idols. They were subsequently punished and killed in a deep well.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
