Saint Gamaliel the Righteous
Righteous teacher
Jerusalem and Caphargamala
Feast day: August 2

A life of faith
Gamaliel was a respected teacher of the Law. The calendar recalls his counsel that the authorities should leave the apostles alone rather than risk opposing God. It also preserves the tradition that he buried Stephen and sheltered Nicodemus after his expulsion from Jerusalem. Gamaliel and his son Abibas are remembered in the account of the discovery of Stephen’s relics.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
A reflection
Gamaliel invites reflection on restraint in judgment and practical protection for people under threat.
