Saint Gennadius Scholarius
Patriarch and theological writer
Constantinople, Mount Athos and Serres · 15th century
Feast day: August 31

A life of faith
Gennadius, originally named George Scholarius, studied philosophy, theology and law in Constantinople. He taught and translated or commented on works in Latin before entering monastic life with the name Gennadius. After the Ottoman conquest of Constantinople, he became its patriarch in 1454. The Patriarchate’s account credits him with establishing the Patriarchal School. He later resigned and lived at monasteries on Mount Athos and near Serres. His writings preserved a substantial record of theological and philosophical study.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
