Saint George the New of Sofia
Goldsmith and martyr
Kratovo and Sofia · 16th century
Feast day: February 11

A life of faith
George came from Kratovo and learned the goldsmith’s craft. After his father died, he moved to Sofia and lived with a priest who instructed him in Scripture. The received life describes pressure to abandon his Christian faith and his repeated refusal. During imprisonment he asked his priest for help obtaining his release and for prayer. He was killed in Sofia in 1515. Christians later recovered his body and buried him at the church of Saint Marina.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
A reflection
