Saint Gerasimus of Boldino
Venerable Founder
Pereslavl, Boldino, Vyazma, and the Bryansk region
Feast day: May 1

A life of faith
Gerasimus, born Gregory, received monastic formation under Daniel of Pereslavl before seeking a quieter life near Smolensk. The OCA describes attacks by robbers, suspicion from local residents, and imprisonment as a vagrant. He answered mistreatment with prayer rather than retaliation. Once able to receive disciples, he built a church and cells at Boldino and established further communities at Vyazma and near the Zhizdra River. His guidance included practical arrangements for communal governance and final instructions to the abbots and monks. He died in 1554. His commemoration remembers persistent community building after a difficult beginning, with authority directed toward sustaining other people's monastic life.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
A reflection
Consider how a community can outlast its founder. Gerasimus's remembered instructions and shared governance place continuing responsibility beside the initial work of building.
