Saint Germanus of Constantinople
Patriarch and Confessor
Constantinople and Cyzicus
Feast day: May 12

A life of faith
Germanus entered monastic life after violence against his family and studied Scripture before becoming Bishop of Cyzicus. As Patriarch of Constantinople, he defended the veneration of icons against the policy of Leo III. The conflict ended in his removal from office and retirement to a monastery. His written teaching continued to matter after his death: letters on icons were read at the Council of Nicaea in 787. The OCA also remembers writings on the liturgy, Scripture, church history, and feasts of the Theotokos. His commemoration joins a costly public confession with teaching that helped later generations understand the Church's worship.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
A reflection
Explain a familiar part of worship to someone who wants to understand it. Germanus's remembered writings show theological learning serving prayer beyond the author's own lifetime.
