Saint Gherman of Dobrogea
Monk
Dobrogea, Bethlehem, Egypt and Rome
Feast day: February 28 (2026 calendar; February 29 in leap years)

A life of faith
Gherman was a close companion of John Cassian from their early years. Together they entered monastic life near Bethlehem and visited monastic communities in Egypt to learn from experienced elders. They later supported John Chrysostom and travelled to Rome on behalf of his supporters. The calendar preserves Gherman’s part in these journeys while acknowledging that later news of his life is limited.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
A reflection
Gherman’s example invites you to learn with a faithful companion and support another person when difficulties arise.
