Saint Gildas the Wise of Rhuys
Monk and writer
Britain and Brittany · 6th century
Feast day: January 29

A life of faith
Gildas was a British monk and writer associated with Wales and Brittany. Later lives connect his education with Illtyd’s community in Wales. The received life places him in retreat on the island of Houat and credits him with founding a monastery on the Rhuys peninsula. His best-known work, On the Ruin and Conquest of Britain, challenged the conduct of rulers and clergy. Remembered as the Wise, he joined a life of prayer with writing that called his readers to examine their responsibilities.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
A reflection
Study becomes fruitful when it leads to honest self-examination. Gildas invites us to bring learning and prayer into the choices of ordinary life.
