Saint Glaphyra of Amasea
Righteous Virgin
The imperial court and Amasea
Feast day: April 26

A life of faith
Glaphyra served Empress Constantia and sought her help when Emperor Licinius directed unwanted sexual attention toward her. With the empress's assistance, she escaped and eventually found shelter with Bishop Basil at Amasea. While there, she gave the funds she had received toward the construction of a church and asked Constantia for further support. The OCA's account says that Glaphyra died before the emperor's order for her arrest arrived. Her commemoration remembers a woman who sought protection and then supported the worship of the community that sheltered her. Most of the source's later narrative concerns Basil and must not be transferred to her.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
A reflection
Help someone seek a safe refuge when power is misused. Glaphyra's remembered response includes asking for protection, an action that deserves support rather than blame.
