A life of faith

Gregory was the husband of Nonna and father of Gregory the Theologian, Gorgonia and Caesarius. After becoming Christian, he served as Bishop of Nazianzus. His son’s funeral oration remembers his patient pastoral teaching, reconciliation during a church dispute and generosity toward poor people. Gregory used his resources to support the church and shared charitable work with Nonna. His son also acknowledges that his father had been misled by an ambiguous doctrinal document before peace was restored.

The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.

A reflection

Patience can make room for correction. Gregory’s example invites careful teaching, generosity and a willingness to restore trust.
