Saint Gregory of Gornjak
Monastic founder and writer
Mount Athos and Gornjak
Feast day: December 20 (Gregorian); December 7 (Julian)

A life of faith
Gregory of Gornjak was a Serbian monk whose received life names him as a disciple of Gregory of Sinai and Romil of Ravanica. He wrote Romil’s life and is remembered as the founder of the monastery of Saint Nicholas on Mount Athos, later called Gregoriou. He prayed in silence in a nearby cell. After attacks on Mount Athos, he went to Serbia and worked with Prince Lazar to establish the monastery later known as Gornjak. He died around 1406; the account leaves uncertain whether he died at Gornjak or Gregoriou.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
