Saint Gregory of Peć
Monk and martyr
Peć and the Patriarchal monastery
Feast day: February 7 (Gregorian); January 25 (Julian)

A life of faith
Gregory belonged to the monastic community at the Patriarchal monastery in Peć during Ottoman rule. His received account leaves his birthplace, precise dates and possible priestly ordination uncertain. The account describes a forced conversion, followed by his public reaffirmation of Christianity and denunciation of Islam. He was then fatally attacked in Peć. Local Christians buried him, and a chapel later marked his grave. His memory continued among the people of Peć even after the chapel was destroyed.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
A reflection
Conscience and safety both matter. Seek trusted help when facing coercion, and support others without demanding that they endure danger.
