Saint Helen the Empress
Equal-to-the-Apostles
Jerusalem & Roman Empire · 4th century
Feast day: May 21; March 6 (finding of the Cross)

A life of faith
Helen, the mother of Emperor Constantine, is remembered for her journey to Jerusalem and her support for the Christian holy places. Church tradition associates her with the finding of the Cross, working with Bishop Macarius to locate the places connected with Christ’s suffering and Resurrection. Her commemoration draws attention to the care of sacred memory: places, buildings, and material resources can help a community remember the Gospel. Helen’s example also invites those with influence to consider how their resources might serve worship, preserve a shared inheritance, and make room for other people’s devotion.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
A reflection
Choose one way to care for a place that sustains faith: help with a parish task, preserve a family story, or offer resources that allow others to participate in worship.
