Saint Hermias of Comana
Soldier and martyr
Comana · 2nd century
Feast day: May 31

A life of faith
Hermias was an elderly soldier from Comana during the reign of Antoninus Pius. He refused the governor Sebastian’s order to sacrifice to the gods. The governor subjected him to torture and arranged for him to drink poison. The received life remembers Hermias surviving the poison, after which the man who administered it confessed the Christian faith and was killed. Hermias later suffered martyrdom by beheading.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
A reflection
Hermias faced pressure late in life. Consider a conviction that you want to carry faithfully through changing circumstances.
