Saint Hermogenes of Moscow
Hieromartyr and Patriarch
Kazan and Moscow
Feast day: February 17

A life of faith
Hermogenes served as a priest in Kazan before becoming a monk, metropolitan, and eventually Patriarch of Moscow. His earlier ministry included several days of instruction for newly baptized Tatars and writing accounts of local saints and the Kazan icon. As patriarch during the Time of Troubles, he addressed letters to communities divided by political conflict, urging fidelity and an end to bloodshed. His resistance to the forces occupying Moscow led to imprisonment. He continued sending messages from confinement and died of starvation in 1612. His commemoration remembers pastoral teaching and steadfastness while requiring care about the national and political language surrounding his life.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
A reflection
Use words that help a divided community act responsibly. Hermogenes's remembered teaching and prison letters invite reflection on conviction without contempt for entire peoples.
