Saint Hilarion of the Dalmatian Monastery
Venerable Confessor and Abbot
Constantinople and Aphousia
Feast day: June 6

A life of faith
Hilarion entered monastic life near Constantinople and later joined the Dalmatian Monastery, where he became a priest. Although initially reluctant to become abbot, he accepted responsibility for the community after the patriarch's intervention. His defense of icon veneration brought imprisonment, deprivation, and repeated exile under iconoclast rulers. Returning to the monastery did not persuade him or the brethren to abandon their worship. After the persecution ended, he again accepted the abbacy and spent his final years guiding the community. His commemoration remembers the endurance of a pastoral responsibility interrupted by coercion, rather than a search for authority or public prestige.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
A reflection
Consider how to resume a useful responsibility after an interruption. Hilarion's return to his community remembers leadership as a commitment to people rather than an honor.
