Saint Ignatius the New Martyr
Monastic martyr
Eski Zagora, Mount Athos and Constantinople
Feast day: May 1

A life of faith
Ignatius was born John at Eski Zagora and entered monastic life at Rila before later settling on Mount Athos. His received life recounts that, under threat from soldiers, he promised to become Muslim but afterward returned to Christian monastic life. He received the name Ignatius and traveled to Constantinople to confess Christianity publicly. The account also describes his pursuit of execution, religious insults and striking a servant during his court appearance. He was imprisoned and hanged in October 1814. He is commemorated with Euthymius and Acacius on May 1.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
