Saint Ignatius of Antioch
Hieromartyr & bishop
Antioch & Rome · early 2nd century
Feast day: December 20

A life of faith
Ignatius served as Bishop of Antioch and encouraged his community during persecution. After his condemnation, he was taken under guard toward Rome. Along the journey he met Christians from other cities and wrote letters that have remained an important witness to the early Church. Those letters connect faith in Christ with the shared life of worship, responsible leadership, and unity among believers. He died as a martyr in Rome. The Church calls him the God-Bearer, remembering a life centered on Christ. His example shows pastoral care continuing even when the pastor’s own circumstances become severe.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
