Saint Ilie Iorest
Metropolitan
Putna and Transylvania
Feast day: April 24

A life of faith
Ilie Iorest learned monastic life, calligraphy, and icon painting at Putna before becoming metropolitan of Transylvania. He completed the publication of an Orthodox teaching Gospel begun by his predecessor and visited churches across the region. He resisted pressure to replace Orthodox teaching and suffered imprisonment and beatings. After release, he sought help to repay the people who had guaranteed his ransom.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
A reflection
Iorest’s example invites faithful teaching and responsibility toward people who have supported you in difficult circumstances.
