Saint Irenaeus of Sirmium
Bishop and martyr
Sirmium in Lower Pannonia
Feast day: April 6

A life of faith
Irenaeus was bishop of Sirmium in Lower Pannonia during the persecution under Diocletian. Brought before the governor Probus, he repeatedly refused to sacrifice to the gods. The calendar remembers his prayer during torture and the appeals made by his family. He maintained his confession and was executed, with his body cast into the Sava River.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
A reflection
Irenaeus invites reflection on sustaining conviction while recognizing the strain that hardship places on a family.
