A life of faith

Irene came from a wealthy Cappadocian family. Her traditional life describes a journey toward a proposed imperial marriage that instead led her to the monastery of Chrysovolantou. She freed her servants, gave her wealth to poor people, and joined the community. She became known for undertaking difficult ordinary work without complaint and for reading the lives of saints. Chosen as abbess, she prayed for the wisdom to care for the women entrusted to her. The Church remembers her spiritual counsel and deep prayer alongside the humility that shaped her earliest service in the monastery.

The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
