Saint Irene the Great Martyr
Great martyr
Persia & eastern Mediterranean · 4th century
Feast day: May 5

A life of faith
The traditional life of Irene begins with a young woman named Penelope, educated by the Christian tutor Apellian. After baptism she received the name Irene and committed herself to Christ despite pressure from her family and successive rulers. Her life describes sustained prayer, reading, and public teaching, bringing others to Christian faith. She continued that witness through imprisonment and persecution. The account follows her through several cities and preserves differing traditions about her death. The Church remembers her courage together with the work of sharing the faith she had received.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
A reflection
Consider how careful learning can strengthen courage. Ask how you can speak about faith clearly while respecting the freedom and dignity of another person.
