Saint Isidore of Chios
Soldier and martyr
Chios · 3rd century
Feast day: May 14

A life of faith
Isidore was among the young men enrolled in the army on Chios during the reign of Decius. He practiced prayer, fasting and self-restraint. When soldiers were ordered to sacrifice to idols, he was reported as a Christian and brought before the tribune Numerian. Isidore refused the demand and endured torture before his martyrdom. His friend Antony secretly buried his body, and a Christian woman later arranged a more honorable resting place.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
A reflection
Isidore joined prayer with steadfast choices. Consider how a regular prayer practice can support one difficult decision.
