Saint James, Son of Zebedee
Apostle & martyr
Galilee & Jerusalem · 1st century
Feast day: April 30

A life of faith
James, the son of Zebedee and brother of John, left his former life to follow Christ as one of the Twelve. With Peter and John he witnessed the Transfiguration and other moments of particular closeness to the Lord. He continued preaching after Pentecost and was killed under Herod Agrippa, becoming the first of the Twelve to die as a martyr. The traditional account remembers him forgiving a man who had accused him and later repented. James’s witness joins steadfast confession with mercy, refusing to let injustice erase the command to love.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
A reflection
When you face unfairness, ask for courage without bitterness. Consider whether one response can defend the truth while leaving room for repentance and reconciliation rather than personal revenge.
