A life of faith

James is honored as the Lord’s brother and the first Bishop of Jerusalem. Orthodox tradition understands his family relationship through Joseph the Betrothed. He presided at the Jerusalem council described in Acts, helping the Church address a difficult question about Gentile converts. The New Testament letter associated with him calls believers to put faith into action, to listen readily, and to restrain anger. His traditional martyrdom includes prayer for his enemies. James’s life brings together responsibility for a community, practical moral teaching, and the mercy needed when leadership meets resistance.

The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
