Saint Januarius of Benevento
Bishop and martyr
Benevento & Campania, Italy
Feast day: April 21

A life of faith
Januarius was a bishop in Campania whose seat was at Benevento. During persecution he was brought before the governor Timothy and refused to worship idols. The received life remembers his suffering with several Christian companions and their execution. His relics were later kept at Naples.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
A reflection
Januarius’s commemoration places a bishop beside companions of different roles. Notice the people whose contribution to your community can be overlooked.
