Saint Jeremiah the Prophet
Prophet
Judah and Egypt · Biblical era
Feast day: May 1

A life of faith
Jeremiah came from the priestly community of Anathoth and initially felt too young and unable to speak for the task entrusted to him. His ministry nevertheless brought him into public conflict as he warned of Jerusalem’s destruction and called for repentance. He endured imprisonment and was rescued after being lowered into a pit. The fall of the city brought sorrow rather than personal triumph; the Church remembers him as a prophet of tears. Afterward he was taken to Egypt with people who had fled Judah. His witness combines unwelcome truth with grief for the very people who resisted his words.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
A reflection
Speak a necessary truth without enjoying another person’s distress. Pray for the people involved, and let compassion shape both the words and the timing.
