Saint Joachim, father of the Theotokos
Righteous ancestor of God
Galilee · before Christ
Feast day: September 9

A life of faith
Church tradition remembers Joachim and Anna as the parents of Mary, the Mother of God. Joachim’s account includes the sorrow of childlessness and the humiliation of being treated as unworthy because he had no child. He continued to pray rather than abandoning trust in God. The birth of Mary brought joy to the couple and belongs to the Church’s contemplation of preparation for the Incarnation. Joachim’s remembrance can speak to people carrying a private grief under the judgment of others. His worth, and the worth of every person, cannot be measured by family circumstances or public expectations.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
A reflection
Pray with patience about a grief you cannot control. Offer kindness to someone facing unfair expectations, remembering that childlessness or delayed hopes never diminish a person’s dignity.
