Mount Athos, Krasen and Tarnovo · 13th century
Feast day: January 18 (life and annual notice); September 9 (annual notice); article heading says April 18

A life of faith
Joachim became a monk on Mount Athos before returning to Bulgaria and settling near Krasen with disciples. With support from Ivan Asen II, he arranged the building of a rock monastery dedicated to the Archangel Michael and gathered a monastic community. He later became Patriarch of Tarnovo. The received life remembers his continued prayer, help for orphans and poor people, visits to prisoners and appeals for people facing death sentences. He died in 1246.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
