Saint Joannicius of Devič
Venerable Monk
Zeta, Crna Reka, and Devič
Feast day: December 2

A life of faith
Joannicius came from Zeta and sought a solitary life in eastern Serbia. He established a cell near Crna Reka, where visitors eventually sought his teaching and others asked for guidance in monastic life. A community formed around him before he moved to the forest of Devič. The OCA's received life remembers sustained prayer in both places and connects the foundation at Devič with the patronage of Prince George Branković. Joannicius died in the fifteenth century. His commemoration recalls a hermit's relationship with people seeking direction, while the narrative's miracles and exact lifespan remain matters of received tradition rather than independently established biography.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
A reflection
Offer attention to someone seeking direction without making yourself the center of their life. Joannicius's remembered solitude existed alongside teaching and care for a community.
