A life of faith

John Cassian traveled with his friend Germanus to learn from monks in Palestine and Egypt. He listened carefully to their experience of prayer, humility, friendship, and the struggle against destructive habits. He later served with John Chrysostom and established monasteries in Gaul. His Institutes and Conferences carried the experience of Eastern monastic life to readers in the West. Cassian’s witness makes learning a form of patient listening rather than the collection of impressive ideas. The wisdom he shared grew from conversations with people whose daily lives had been shaped by prayer and practical spiritual effort.

The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.

A reflection

Listen carefully to someone with experience you lack. Keep one useful lesson, and put that lesson into practice before seeking another new idea or method to collect.
