A life of faith

John lived in the monastic world of Sinai, first under a guide and later in solitude before serving as abbot. At another abbot’s request he wrote The Ladder of Divine Ascent, arranging instruction about the spiritual life in thirty steps. The work attends closely to pride, anger, discernment, repentance, and love. The Church also remembers him on the fourth Sunday of Great Lent. His teaching treats growth as patient work rather than instant achievement. Though written for monks, his reflections invite every reader to examine motives carefully and seek guidance appropriate to their circumstances.

The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.

A reflection

Begin with one manageable habit rather than a dramatic spiritual program. Read demanding ascetic teaching with a priest’s guidance, and look for growth in patience, humility, and love.
