Saint John the Hermit of Emesa
Monk and hermit
Emesa and the Jordan wilderness
Feast day: July 21

A life of faith
John and his friend Simeon came from Emesa in Syria. After visiting Jerusalem, they entered monastic life at the monastery of Gerasimus near the Jordan, where the abbot Nicon tonsured them. The two lived in the wilderness for many years. John remained there after Simeon returned to life among people.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
