Saint John Branković, Despot of Serbia
Ruler and benefactor
Albania, Friuli and Srem
Feast day: December 23 (Gregorian); December 10 (Julian)

A life of faith
John Branković was the son of Stephen the Blind and Angelina. Born while his family was in Albania, he grew up in Friuli in Italy. He later moved with his mother and brother George to Srem. When George became a monk with the name Maximus, John succeeded him as despot. His received life describes his support for Orthodox monasteries, both with his family and through his own gifts, and his prayer for the people entrusted to him. John died at Berkasovo in 1502. His memory became associated with Krušedol Monastery.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
