Saint John Kaloktenes of Thebes
Metropolitan and benefactor
Constantinople and Thebes · 12th century
Feast day: April 29

A life of faith
John Kaloktenes was born in Constantinople and became metropolitan of Thebes in the twelfth century. He is remembered as the New Merciful for his care of the city after Norman attacks. His work included a school for girls, a hospital, a home for older people and shelter for people in need. He also arranged a water supply and a bridge to serve the wider community. His ministry joined church leadership with practical care for daily needs.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
