A life of faith

John of Karpathos wrote spiritual counsel for monks who had asked for encouragement. His hundred chapters of consolation and an ascetic discourse were preserved in the Philokalia. His teaching urges attention to the inner life, restraint in speech, and perseverance when spiritual effort becomes difficult.

The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.

A reflection

John’s counsel invites a pause before speaking. What would a thoughtful and encouraging response sound like today?
