Saint John of Damascus
Venerable theologian & hymnographer
Damascus & Saint Savva Monastery · 7th–8th centuries
Feast day: December 4

A life of faith
John grew up in a Christian family in Damascus and received a broad education. His traditional life describes public service before his entry into the Monastery of Saint Savva near Jerusalem. He became a major defender of the veneration of icons and wrote theological works that helped explain the Orthodox faith. He also composed hymns, including words used in the Church’s care for the grieving. John’s example brings learning, prayer, and artistic work into a common purpose. Knowledge becomes service when it helps a community worship, understand its faith, and find words of hope in sorrow.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
