Saint John of Rila
Venerable Abbot
Rila, Bulgaria
Feast day: August 18

A life of faith
John of Rila sought a solitary life after an early period of hardship and work as a cowherd. The OCA's received life remembers years of prayer in caves and other remote places before disciples gathered around him. When hungry shepherds found him, he welcomed them to share his food. He later accepted responsibility for a monastic community and wrote a testament for his disciples. He also declined a royal meeting rather than seek public prominence. His commemoration recalls both solitude and the obligations created when others seek spiritual guidance. Rila Monastery became a lasting center of his memory in the Bulgarian Church.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
A reflection
Consider how a need for solitude can coexist with hospitality. John's remembered welcome to hungry shepherds places care for a visitor within a life of prayer.
