A life of faith

John Maximovitch became a monk and priest after his family fled the Russian Revolution. As bishop in Shanghai he worked to unite Orthodox communities and supported churches, hospitals, and orphanages. He prayed continually and visited sick people with Communion. When his community had to leave China, he helped refugees reach safety and advocated for their admission to the United States. Later service took him to Western Europe and San Francisco, where he worked amid division to complete a cathedral. His life joins deep devotion with concrete advocacy for people facing illness, displacement, and uncertainty.

The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.

A reflection

Consider the needs of displaced families and sick neighbors. Support a concrete act of care that gives people stability rather than only offering encouragement.
