Saint John of Tarnovo
Martyr
Omurtag and Tarnovo, Bulgaria · 19th century
Feast day: July 16

A life of faith
John came from the town now called Omurtag. After the deaths of his parents, he moved to Tarnovo and worked with a maker of bricks and roof tiles. The received account describes his arrest after involvement in a conspiracy and his abandonment of Christianity under fear of execution. He later returned to his Christian confession. During renewed imprisonment he prayed. On the way to execution he asked forgiveness. He was hanged at Tarnovo on July 16, 1822.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
