Saint John the Baptist
Prophet, forerunner & martyr
Judea & Jordan · 1st century
Feast day: January 7; June 24; August 29

A life of faith
John called people to repentance and prepared them to receive Christ. The son of Zachariah and Elizabeth, he lived an austere life before preaching beside the Jordan. He baptized Jesus and bore witness to the Savior rather than treating his own ministry as an end in itself. The Gospel accounts also remember his confrontation with Herod and his death by execution. Orthodox worship gives him an especially prominent place as prophet and forerunner. John’s life brings courage and humility together: a clear public voice can direct attention away from the speaker and toward the truth being served.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
A reflection
Consider where you need an honest change of direction. Let repentance lead to a practical step, and ask whether your words direct attention toward truth or toward your own importance.
