Saint John the Faster
Patriarch
Constantinople
Feast day: September 2

A life of faith
John began working life as a goldsmith in Constantinople, but became known for prayer, restraint, and interest in monastic discipline. He entered the clergy and continued daily study of Scripture and other church writings. Chosen as patriarch in 582, he taught through both preaching and personal example. His generosity to poor people left him with very few personal possessions at his death in 595. The Church also remembers writings associated with his name on repentance and confession. His title, the Faster, recalls an ascetic life, while his care for people in need shows that self-discipline was joined to outward generosity.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
A reflection
Consider whether personal discipline makes you more generous. John's memory links restraint and study with care for poor people, rather than measuring holiness by deprivation alone.
