Saint John the Merciful
Patriarch
Cyprus and Alexandria · 6th–7th centuries
Feast day: November 12

A life of faith
John was born on Cyprus and entered monastic life after the deaths of his wife and children. As patriarch of Alexandria, he treated care for people in need as a central responsibility of the Church. He organized regular support for the poor, received petitioners outside the cathedral, visited the sick, and used church resources to help ransom captives. His mercy also shaped personal relationships. The OCA life remembers him interrupting worship to seek reconciliation with an offended clergyman and responding generously to someone who had insulted his family. His public office became a means of practical compassion.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
A reflection
Give mercy a regular place in your schedule. Offer help that answers a real need, and seek reconciliation where resentment has begun to harden.
