Saint John the New of Suceava
Martyr
Trebizond, Cetatea Albă and Suceava
Feast day: June 2

A life of faith
John was a merchant from Trebizond who travelled by sea. The Romanian Patriarchate account remembers him praying and caring for sick passengers during a voyage. After a false accusation at Cetatea Albă, he refused to deny his Christian faith and suffered martyrdom. His later veneration became closely associated with Suceava. His feast on June 2 remembers both practical compassion and steadfast confession.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
A reflection
Consider how practical care can accompany your ordinary work, especially when someone nearby is ill or alone.
